Frequently Asked Questions - long-war-2/lwotc GitHub Wiki (2024)

What is Long War of the Chosen?

Long War of the Chosen is a total conversion mod that makes significant changes to XCOM 2 with the War of the Chosen DLC Enabled, such as making the global mission selection screen, the Geoscape, a battlefield unto itself. One of the most significant changes is the increased number of soldiers the commander can take on each mission, allowing for more rapid promotions. The mod integrates the custom classes introduced in Long War 2 with the new Faction Hero Classes introduced in the War of the Chosen DLC.

Some other changes include: A much longer and more challenging campaign, running for 100 to 120 missions on average (200-300 hours). New Infiltration mechanics that require you to send out multiple squads at once. Manage resistance Havens and have resistance members scrounge for supplies, gather intelligence or recruit more people to your cause.

Thirteen Soldier classes: Reaper, Templar, Skirmisher, Sharpshooter, Shinobi, Ranger, Assault, Gunner, Grenadier, Specialist, Technical and Psionic Operative (plus SPARKs for DLC owners), each with unique secondary weapons and unique skill trees.

Two new weapon tiers, Lasers and Coilguns. Dozens of new enemies including "The Chosen" who will launch increasingly deadly interventions against your resistance contacts and make things harder for the XCOM project. And smarter ADVENT battlefield AI that tries to counter your moves.

Who’s developing Long War of the Chosen?

Long War of the Chosen is primarily a port of the existing Long War 2 mod created by Pavonis Interactive. On Nov 7th 2017, Pavonis Interactive announced the end of development on the Long War 2 project on their forums. They also opened up access to all their assets and code so that other modders could continue working on it.

There have been several attempts to create a Long War of the Chosen. This is the latest, started by Peter Ledbrook in early 2019. He single-handedly rebooted the project, put it on GitHub and on April 4th 2019 released the first fully playable alpha. He has since been joined by a community of modders, streamers and players who are trying to make the game great again.

After the Steam release, the previous developers went on a hiatus. The project was handed over to Tedster in summer 2023.

How do I install Long War of the Chosen?

The easiest way is to subscribe on Steam Workshop. Alternatively, follow the installation instructions on this wiki.

What WOTC features are in/not in LWOTC?

Most of the new WOTC features, like covert actions and the Chosen themselves, are in LWOTC. Some are better integrated than others.

The main feature that is off by default are resistance orders (there is a second wave option to enable them, however they have not been balanced)

Is Long War of the Chosen balanced and as challenging as the original Long War 2?

The War of the Chosen expansion introduced a lot of new features that have already been incorporated into LWOTC. Many of those favour the player, so we still have some balancing work to do to ensure that they make the game interesting while not making it too easy.

The core aim at this point is to keep the mod as close to the challenge and difficulty of version 1.5 of Long War 2. That means some much-loved elements of WOTC will be removed or nerfed in the interests of both balance and time. Ultimately, we want to get a playable mod into players hands as soon as possible.

I've followed the installation instructions and LWOTC doesn't work, what can I do?

Follow the step-by-step instructions in our LWOTC Troubleshooting Guide.

Do missions load quickly like in War of the Chosen? Or slow like in Long War 2?

Missions will load super fast just like in the War of the Chosen DLC.

I own the game on PS4 and/or XBOX One. Can I play Long War of the Chosen?

Unfortunately, you cannot install mods on console versions of the game.

Which mods are compatible with Long War of the Chosen?

There is a minimum viable mods list used by Kaen with as few mods as possible to get an enjoyable experience with Long War of the Chosen. Several old Long War 2 quality of life mods have also been fully integrated into LWOTC itself.

Check out the Community-managed mod compatibility list for a more comprehensive overview of which mods are compatible. However, note that these mods might work individually with LWOTC, but may conflict with one another. Your mileage may vary.

There is also the #modcompatibility channel on our community Discord server if you need help getting your mods to work with Long War of the Chosen. Please do a channel search before asking as the question may already have been answered.

If you are a modder who wants to make your mods officially compatible with LWOTC, do drop by our Discord and let us know how we can help in the #modcompatibility channel.

Where do I go to learn more about Long War of the Chosen gameplay mechanics?

We are still working on our own wiki. In the meantime, you can get more information in the Long War 2 wiki. The basic mechanics of the strategy layer are the same as in Long War 2. However, many soldier classes have been rebalanced so most LW2 class guides are outdated.

Kaen also has some Alpha and Pre-Beta LWOTC Legend Campaigns on YouTube.

Are the developers of LWOTC making huge buckets of money from this project?

YES!!!... No. This is an open source, community-driven, volunteer project. No one is getting paid anything by anyone for working on it. While we appreciate that many people would like to support the project financially, we are currently not accepting any monetary donations.

Except maybe Kaen, who gets paid in Likes. And for the 7 “Likes” he got from the 1000+ hours spent working on the project, he is now sailing around the Mediterranean on his $150M Luxury Yacht streaming LWOTC from his private satellite. Thanks guys!

How can I contribute to the Project?

The project needs work in multiple areas and would benefit from others:

  • Coding
  • Modeling and animation
  • Translations
  • Documentation and tutorials
  • Testing

If you have some coding experience and would like to contribute in that area, drop by the #development channel on our Discord. And if you just want to get stuck right in, fork the GitHub repository and start some pull requests. Instructions for building the mod (not for the faint of heart) are in the README on the main project page. Take a look at the (ever-expanding) list of existing issues on Github to see what needs doing. Also do to say hi.

If you would like to propose translation changes or new language content for LWOTC, then you can do so using the same approach as above, via GitHub pull requests. The translations are all in the project’s LongWarOfTheChosen/Localization directory. If you would like to help, come talk to us on Discord. Note that untranslated content is marked by the text “LWOTC Needs Translation” in the *.int files.

If you are an artist, modeller, animator, designer and/or wish to contribute other skills to the project, please drop by our Community Discord and let us know how you want to contribute in the #development channel.

If you would like to do some serious testing, then get in touch on Discord. Otherwise, if you just want to report issues, then please create a GitHub account and raise issues there.

Lastly, documentation can be contributed via the GitHub wiki. But you are also more than welcome and encourage to use your own channels for your own content, be that YouTube videos, blog posts, or whatever.

How do I report bugs to the developers?

You can submit bugs (create a new issue) on Github. Please first search existing issues to ensure that it is something no one else has already reported. If the problem/bug has already been reported, please add your own experiences to the existing issue thread.

If you have a save file that makes it easy for us to reproduce the problem, please zip it up and attach it to the issue. They make it so much easier to diagnose and fix issues. Alternatively, detailing the steps needed to reproduce the issue can help if you don’t have a save. However, don’t assume that it’s easy or quick to reproduce issues this way. Remember, there may be a lot of issues that the developers need to get through, so even things that take “just” five minutes to set up will be time consuming.

Screenshots, console logs, video clips are also helpful for confirming that there actually is an issue and where it might lie in the mod. A picture is worth a thousand words and all that.

Where do I find my save files?

On a standard Windows 10 Machine, you can find them in your My Games directory here:

~\My Documents\My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\SaveData

Linux saves are stored here:

~/.local/share/feral-interactive/xcom2/vfs/local/my games/xcom2/xcomgame/savedata

Where can I find my console log files?

The log files for LWOTC are in a directory alongside your save directory. On a Standard Window 10 machine, that’s here:

~\My Documents\My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\Logs
